FAQ

Why aren't more independent films distributed?

Many indie filmmakers believe that distributors will take their films.

They are certain distributors will take their films, as they know that the public will love them.

But this is rare. Distributors often benefit from independent filmmakers.

They might delay a film’s release date until after the awards show has finished.

They also delay the release date for a low-budget film until the summer blockbuster movie season has begun.

Distributors also try to keep films away from audiences until they've already spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, popcorn, or candy.

After all, they don't want to lose out on those profits.

How many theaters would I need in order to get my money back?

It depends on how many weeks you plan to make your theatrical production.

You only need one theater if your film will be shown for less than 2 weeks.

If your film is going to be screened for more then two weeks, you will need two theaters.

What are the salaries of actors?

An actor's pay can vary from $1,000,000 per movie to below $100,000 for independent films. The average actor receives between $10,000 and $20,000 for a film. Many actors don't get paid. It depends on how successful they are. Some actors are successful and make millions. Others struggle to find work.

How much does it set you back to distribute a feature length film?

A typical distribution deal costs between $100,000-$150,000.

The average cost of a theater is approximately $10,000

The average screen cost is about $5,000

This means that your distribution fee for 100 screens would be approximately $500,000.

Distribution fees for ten screens would amount to $50,000

What percentage of the box office goes to marketing budgets?

Marketing budgets account for approximately 20% to 40% of film budgets. This is because marketing is critical to the success and longevity of any film.

No one will know about your film if you don't do good marketing. If people don't know anything about your film they won't pay to see it.

How To

How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently has 1,922 listed living people.

To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is attached on a concrete base at the star.

If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do, they will send a letter explaining their decision to the applicant at his/her home address. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The other half goes to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. For example, if you were first nominated in 1990, you would owe $15,000. For example, if your first nomination was in 1990, you would owe $15,000. However, if it had been in 1980, you would owe 10,000.

To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will remove your name from this list.

What age is required to become a HWOF star?

When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. A person must be present at the time of receiving a star. After receiving a star, one may still be nominated again after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Nominating you can be done by family members. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.

Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?

The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.

What happened to all the stars stolen? The thieves stole around 1,200 stars. Each star is between 250-300 lbs. If you add all of the weight together, it comes to approximately 4 tons of stars!
