The Coat of Arms of England

indian celebrities

England's coat of arms is different from other ones. It has a unique tincture azure tongue and claws which is not cited by many blazons. This distinguishing feature was added to the Arms of England in the High Middle Ages. Since then the coat of arms was modified to include the symbols for the House of Nassau or the kings in France. But it hasn't changed much since King Richard I (1189-1199).

Three golden lions

The lions appear on the coat of arms of several nations, including France, Sweden, Denmark, and England. Historically, the three lions were a symbol of the throne. Richard the Lion–heart used three Lions on his seal. And the Gawsworth family, a prince of England, included the lions into their coat of arms.

The red dragon

The origin of the red dragon on England's coat of arms has been a long-standing mystery. According to legend, Harold, earl from Wessex owned the dragon. The dragon was modeled after Roman and Carolingian designs. Is this really an English dragon? There is no way to be certain. Let's look closer. Why is it called a dragon?

The harp quarter

English heraldry uses the harp as a common design. It can be crowned and used as a sign of allegiance. In 1586, Elizabeth I used it on her second great seal. It was also used on coins issued by the Lordships of Ireland. It was later used by the Kingdom of Ireland to issue coins. It has also been used on the cap badge of the Royal Irish Constabulary and Royal Ulster Constabulary. The Irish harp can also be found on the cap badge of the Royal Irish Regiment of the British Army.

The royal crest

The king is represented by England's royal crown. It depicts a lion supporting a shield. The shield has a compartment at the back with plant emblems from Ireland and England. It also includes the sovereign's motto, Dieu et mon droit. It is also surrounded by a strap with the motto, Honi soit qui mal y pense.

The escutcheon or shield

A heraldic sheath bears the arms if a spouse. The shield of a married woman might be made from her husband's or her own arms. A married woman may also bear her own arms in a shield with the arms of her husband, which is referred to as an inescutcheon. This shield can be found on certain baroque shields.
