How To

How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently has 1,922 listed living people.

You must first submit your name and address to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to become a member of HWOF. The Hollywood Department of Cultural Affairs then submits your information to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is attached on a concrete base at the star.

If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues the Hollywood Chamber of commerce a check, payable to it. The check is sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The other half goes to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. You would owe $15,000. If you were first Nominated in 1990, for example. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.

You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will remove your name from this list.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To be eligible for a star, you must still be alive. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.

Why not just have stars on every street?

The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.

What happened the star thefts? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs approximately 250-300 pounds, which equates to 4 tons of stars.
