How To
How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce established the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who made motion pictures, television or radio, as well as music and other aspects of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.
To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque is attached on a concrete base at the star.
You can apply for a star if a current member of the HWOF nominated you or if you made significant contributions to movies, television, radio, theatre, music, or something else considered part of "popular culture." A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. A second letter confirms acceptance if the nominee accepts the nomination. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then pays half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs receives the remaining half.
Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.
To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.
How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?
To be nominated, one must be at least 18 years. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. After receiving a Star, one can still be Nominated for another star after ten Years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
Nominating you can be done by family members. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.
Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?
The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.
What happened to the stolen stars? The thieves stole around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250-300 lbs, so if you add up all the weight, that comes out to about 4 tons worth of stars!
